Ocean City and West Ocean City students attend Worcester County Public Schools with six elementary schools, four middle schools and three high schools. Area colleges include Salisbury State University, the University of Maryland: Eastern Shore, Delaware State University and Wesley College (Delaware) and Wor-Wic Community College.
The centerpiece of the community is without a doubt the boardwalk. Newly renovated, the boardwalk features many shops and restaurants, amusement rides and vendors. A boardwalk train ride allows people to take in the sights and "people watch" as they give their feet a rest. The city's 10-mile stretch of wide, sandy beaches are perfect for sunbathing and play host to joggers, kite flyers, volleyball tournaments, sand castle competitions and those just lazily lingering to enjoy the sunset. Both Ocean City and West Ocean City feature fine dining from many waterside settings. The community's more than 160 restaurants serve everything from famous Eastern Shore seafood fresh from the docks, to a variety of ethnic cuisines. Delicious seafood favorites include steamed crabs, lobsters, oysters, clams and a bountiful selection of fresh fish caught daily from ocean waters. There are a host of nightclubs, pubs and dance spots which feature music from blues to jazz, to top 40 and rock 'n roll. There is no more enduring a symbol of Maryland than the blue crab, and few things in life are more satisfying than sitting down to eat a pile of steamy, spicy, self-caught crabs. Crab season runs from April 1 to December 31. For those seeking a more active lifestyle, there are more than 30 great championship golf courses, a tennis center, sailing, surfing, jet-skiing, swimming, parasailing, fishing, skate boarding, windsurfing and more. Ocean City is the White Marlin Capital of the World. The abundance of sea life in the waters off the Atlantic coast and in the local bays makes the Eastern Shore one of the top spots for fishing on the East Coast and draws sport fishermen from around the world. Numerous parks are located throughout the city, many with fishing and crabbing piers. Inlet Park, located on the southern-most end of Ocean City, boasts a newly constructed boardwalk complete with viewing binoculars and informative signs overlooking Assateague Island. The first link of a future bayside boardwalk is marked by the presence of a large Indian structure and is home to Ocean City's marble-topped time capsule. A few minutes from Ocean City lies Assateague Island, a natural barrier island with magnificent marshlands, beautiful beaches and miles of water for endless recreational activities. The island is home to Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park and the wild ponies made famous in the novel "Misty of Chincoteague." Ocean City's origins date back to the mid-1800s. The land that now includes Ocean City was originally part of a tract belonging to Lord Baltimore, who once owned much of what is now the Delmarva Peninsula. The city was founded in 1875 as a small fishing village. Over the years, it has made a gradual transformation into one of the most popular vacation destinations on the East Coast. |
